Jazz
As Pakistan’s leading digital player, Jazz’s vision is to empower the lives and livelihoods of the people of Pakistan, particularly women, through technology. While doing so, we understand the importance of having to introduce and implement environmentally friendly initiatives due to the climate emergency which needs to be addressed. Mobile technology has the powerful ability to support climate action and significant impact has been made across various sectors.
Jazz is uniquely positioned to support climate action within the telecom industry and beyond through digitization. In a pledge with GSMA and to promote the circular economy of Plastic waste, the company has an ambition to send zero waste to landfill and achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. In 2022, Jazz did a waste assessment study to identify its major waste streams. E-waste followed by plastic waste were the two most dominant types of waste generated.
Our main source of plastic waste is our SIM cards. Therefore, by adopting a program related to material efficiency, we are now making two SIMs out of one SIM card jacket. We are aiming to upscale this initiative by reusing or recycling the discarded SIM card jackets and encouraging the use of e-SIMs rather than plastic SIMs in the near future. We are also formalizing our waste management in collaboration with a recycling partner and aim to become a single-use plastic free company by the end of 2023.
